Goodnight, and good luck

the end

So that’s it for us – almost all of the current committee are on are various ways to pastures(/universities) anew. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who deserves it (possibly even you) – it’s been pretty good, no? Also, good luck to those who are taking on the mantle – i don’t know if they’re any good or not (then again, I still don’t know if we’re any good or not), but they look promising, and that’ got to count for something, right?

cheers

Shades of Grey

Monday, April 13, 2009

There’s a chance you’ll have forgotten about it by now, but last term’s Black and White was a little different. I moaned about the last one for very little reason, so it’s only really fair to say this one was better (although that implies that something stated on this blog means something, which it pretty much doesn’t). It looked really good (though why weren’t there more page numbers) and the content was a bit better (not great – but not awful – back to what most of us expect). Anyway, I heard someone (two people, actually – separately) call it a ‘triumph of style over substance’ which isn’t unfair, but it got me thinking about this blog (except that this isn’t really a triumph of anything). There is very little reason for this to be filled with links to other stuff on the internet – we’ll probably still do that, but it isn’t really what this should be for. This term we should have more events, which means that there will be more actual ODDsoc stuff to blog about. The content will be a little more relevant to what we do – there may even be original work (although that’s fairly unlikely). In the future, we hope to actually link what happens up here to what’s going on in the real world – we would have done this already but there’s been a slight lack of events.

Sorry about the naval-gazing – it’s probably not a great idea to be so self centred when you have so little to centre yourself about. Apologies. You’ll still keep reading, though, right? (both of you…)

Dashed Hopes

Friday, March 20, 2009

Have you ever clicked on a link, or started to read a news story, based solely on the headline, only to be sorely disappointed when you find out what’s actually happening? Or, even worse (depending on your perspective), have you clicked a on a link only with the hope that your farfetched interpretation of the title could be true (despite petty things lile ‘reason’ and ‘facts’ holding you back)?

While most of you probably won’t have a clue what I’m talking about (for a change…) today, this was the link that embodied that for me.

Line on the Horizon

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Sorry about the short break – big things (or, at the very least, things) are coming soon, we (well, I, really) promise. Keep your eyes open for more news soon (does next term count as soon?), either in an email, on the blog, or on the big screens in the lunch hall or the atrium (unless the computers are “unwell” again…).

[I realise the title makes no sense - it was meant to be a U2 reference (as in 'No Line on the Horizon') but I changed it because I thought that made no sense... I appreciate the irony]

Good Week

Thursday, March 5, 2009

First, David Bentley misses the all-important penalty in the Carling Cup Final and now Ashley Cole has just been arrested

It’s been a good week

We’re now on YouTube, for no particular reason. Nothing that’s actually relevant on there now, but I’m sure there will/might be. For now, enjoy the following offering:

Because infants love strippers…

Monday, February 23, 2009

Families are protesting against the developement of a lap dancing club in Crouch End because it’s just around the corner from an infants’ school. I may be missing the point here (it’s happened before, it’ll happen again), but what do they think is going to happen? Do they really think that their small children will be cutting class to rush round the corner with fistfulls of notes, desparate to get their daily fix of sinfull bliss? (interstingly (i say interestingly – I don’t really mean it) the building used to be a Salvation Army building, but that’s besides the point (if there is one)). That is if they’re actually let into the place – fake IDs can only go so far. Also, if they are infants, presumably their parents are drropping them off and picking them up at the door, which would seem to imply that they would somehow expose their children to such an adult entertainment centre. That, or I just had a horrifically dull childhood.
